Creating a Team Vision... How to get Started
The current economic climate has created hiring freezes and budget cuts,
which can mean running short on staff and training.
If your team is new, stalled, burnt out, or lacks cohesion then it's a signal to
build a united front... FAST!
Team Vision Quest
One way to keep motivation and performance running as close to top speed
as possible is to UNITE and CONNECT your team.
Now, more than ever, your team needs to know how their work contributes to
the big picture. They need to feel connected to the organization.
Create a solid TEAM VISION
Companies that have enjoyed success over the course of time such as Sony,
Hewlett-Packard, and Nike have discovered one of the most essential business
elements...A Clear Vision.
How to begin to create your team vision... Define your identity
One of the greatest visionaries of the twentieth century looked out on to a
vast area of marshland, and saw a magical place where people from all over
the world could visit, and for at least a day, would forget their worries and
have fun.
WALT DISNEY did not build his vision around how to make more money, or
how to beat the competition. He founded Disney World on family values,
knowledge, and entertainment. These are the things that the Disney stands
for, and it's why they are so successful and still in business today. Their
products, leaders, and competition may change, but (most of the time) their
central values and purpose stays the same.
I. What needs to stay the same and what needs to change?
Identify your organization's VALUES...
Next align your team vision in the same direction.
- Define your company's and team's guiding philosophy.
- What does the organization / team stand for?
- Choose values that will have meaning over a long period of time.
Clarify your organization's / team's central PURPOSE.
- Use your core purpose as a guidepost for the future.
- Keep asking...Why are we in business? What's our team's core purpose?
- Consider short and long term goals.
- Your core purpose will act as an inspirational compass for the future.
- Align your purpose and values with the culture you want to create.
II. Start Asking the Right Questions
- Do you want a proactive team culture?
- Do you have productive team communication norms in place?
- Have you eliminated unproductive team norms?
A solid team vision will help your team stay on track and remain united during
an unpredictable climate of change.
III. Don't forget about strategy...How will you get there?
The next step to consider is how you will activate the vision, which translates
to building a strategy. This is the planning component of your vision.
Who Will Be Involved?
- Everyone in your team should take part in building the vision.
- Ensure your people have the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to
support and activate both the vision and strategy.
- Collectively decide what you want the team's culture to look like.
Whether you're a new team, or have been working together for years, a clear
team vision is essential to sustaining success.
