Smart Strategy For Virtual and Face To Face Teams
The #1 virtual team strategy also happens to work great with face to face
teams.
With telecommuting and virtual teams becoming the norm, it's all the more
important that you understand how to apply the right structure and leadership
strategies, otherwise it's easy for team members to fall prey to conflict and
confusion, which can greatly hinder team progress and morale.
The #1 strategy to nail down for virtual teams is strategic communication.
The #1 strategy for face to face teams also happens to be strategic
communication.
- You'll want to set up a core strategy for how your team will communicate.
- Your team will not automatically stay dependable, high in morale, and self-
sufficient unless you set up a foundation for great performance.
Here are a few guidelines you should be following when setting up a
communication system with your team.
Three Strategic Communication Guidelines
#1: Clarify roles
Who does what and why? How does it fit into your vision and goals? If you don't
clarify roles, you'll most likely end up with a lot of assumptions and guessing
going on.
#2: Set up how and when the team will communicate
How many times has important information fallen through the cracks? Is there a
weekly meeting or conference call? What's the agenda? What is the process for
asking questions to handle non-routine issues? These are just a few of the
questions to ask when structuring a communication system with your team.
#3: Share information
One person on the team should NOT be the gatekeeper for vital information. Set
up a system for sharing information. Make sure policies and procedures
streamline delivery of information that everyone needs to know as it relates to
the project, customers or business.
When you have a problem with your team, chances are it's because you've
taken a shortcut with training or are lacking a people strategy and smart team
systems. Next time, you have an issue with your business or team, go back to
basics and ask yourself what's missing.
