You're not getting promoted....

You know you're ready to be promoted but you keep getting passed by.
They've just given the newbie in your department the position you thought
you were up for, although you can't figure out what you're doing wrong.

You could be sabotaging your chances of getting promoted without
even knowing it.

Chalk it up to bad habits or a pattern you just happened to get
comfortable with. Maybe you had a bad boss early in your career and think
this is the way it's done. To cut through some of the confusion and clarify
things a bit, I've put together a short list of mistakes to avoid if you want
to move ahead.

Six Promotion Killers: What Not To Do!

1. Do not participate in an "us versus them" organizational culture.
Instead, focus on sharing information and working as a team player.

2. Do not HOG recognition and praise.
Share recognition based on contribution and support received from your
team, supervisors, peers, and even customers.

3. Do not give yourself unrealistic deadlines.
Develop high-level project management skills so you can easily manage
resources, relationships, and deliverables.

4. Do not complain.
Instead, take a solution-focused approach and refrain from personalizing
problems.

5. Do not tell your team that you're disappointed in them.
You're putting people on the defensive by using words like disappointed or
only asking why. Instead, focus on results, outcomes, and impact, and
engage your team in a discussion of what went wrong and how you can
support them in getting it right.

6. Don't blindly assume you're on the fast track.
Sit down with your boss and find out what you need to deliver before
getting to the next level. Do you have their support? What results are they
looking for from you? Ask what skills and abilities you're missing.

Some of you may be thinking, "This is how my company operates."
If you're seeing dysfunctional work behaviors across the board from
supervisors or the overall management of your company, it may be time to
evaluate if it's your skills or your company's work culture that's holding you
back.
