Are you using the right leadership strategies?
Leader Meter
1. I have clearly defined my strategic purpose as a leader
within my business or department.
Yes No
Answer: Yes!
You must consciously decide your role as a leader, both
inside and outside your business. Your approach will largely
depend on the situation. Are you at the helm of a start up,
maneuvering a turnaround, or sustaining success?
2. I am essential to the daily operations of my business or
team.
Yes No
Answer: NO!
How can you work on strategy if you have your hands in
what you are already paying others to do? You have
invested money in hiring and training the right people. If you’re
a business owner, focus on what you’re good at. Stay on track
with working on your business, not in it ( at least not daily).
If you're an independent owner, hire out a contractor or
other resources to do things that are not part of your expertise.
Spend time on revenue generating activities.
If you’re a business professional, then position yourself to be
on track with where you want to go in the firm or with your
career. Work on developing the skills, business results,
relationships, and strategies that will get you there.
3. My team uses structured decision-making to minimize risk
and maximize potential opportunities.
Yes No
Answer: Yes!
If you’re NOT using a decision-making method with your team,
you can bet you're wasting time and money before you
finally get to the right approach.
4. I have a plan in place to convert poor performance into a
motivated team that gets results.
Yes No
Answer: Yes!
Low performers should create their own plans and you
should contribute feedback and structure. Hire and cultivate
great performers with the right recruiting, selection, and
training systems.
5. My people regularly approach me with their ideas and
solutions.
Yes No
Answer: Yes!
If not, you're not benefiting from your group’s collective
intelligence. Use their experience and knowledge. Two heads
are better than one.
If you happen to be an independent business owner without
a team, then assemble a group of advisors if you haven't
already.
6. I use a strategic problem solving method to avoid stress and
conflict.
Yes No
Answer: Yes!
Approach routine and non-routine problems differently. If
you haven’t already, carve out a strategy in this regard. Stress
and conflict will diminish.
7. My people are focused on getting RESULTS.
“People who focus on specific results usually get results.”
This has been a mantra in many successful ventures. Make it
one of yours.
8. I have a system to get valuable feedback from my customers.
Yes No
Answer: Yes!
Customer feedback leads to repeat business. Don’t miss out
on revenue by short cutting here. You absolutely want to
take advantage of this strategy.
9. I am the only leader on my team.
Yes No
Answer: No!
Start to work in partnership and your team's productivity
will start to improve! Your people should view you as part of
the team.
10. My people tend to resist change.
Yes No
Answer: No!
If you answered yes, there is a way to secure their support
and contributions. Hint: Your first step is to find out why there
is resistance.
How many of these skills and strategies are
you missing? These leadership skills and strategies are
all important to your success.
